Happy New Year

Custom Glitter Text

Every year on Dec 31st, my family and friends come over to Grandma's house to celebrate New Years, and my aunt's Elana's birthday.  This year, my cousins, aunt, uncle, great aunt and great uncle, great great grandfather and family friends all came over to celebrate.

My great great grandfather is 92 years old!

My grandma always makes a lot of food such as beef stuffed cabage and different kinds of salads. This year, my dad made a large turkey, just like the one we had for Thanksgiving. My favorite was the turkey. For dessert we had chocolate, ice cream, and cake. I didn't really like the cakes but I really liked ice cream and chocolate.  It was my aunts birthday so we put 6 candles because she is 26 years old and we all sang happy birthday.

I brought  my violin to the party and I played Happy Birthday to my aunt and a couple other songs that I recently learned.  My aunt and the other guests liked how I played.

We were all playing and having fun and then all of a sudden, my grandma calls everyone into the living room and said, its fifteen minutes until New Years! This was the first year that I stayed up until midnight. My grandfather pored Champagne into everyone's glasses and we watched on television as the New Year's Eve ball slowly dropped down.  When it was 10 seconds until midnight, all of my family members counted down until 0. Then we all started to scream and  hugged and said Happy New Year to each other.

Two brothers (my grandpa and great uncle David)

What was your favorite part of New Year?

Did you stay up until midnight?

Did you watch the ball drop on television?

  2. Dear Sarah,

What a wonderful post about your New Year's Eve party with your family! Wow! Happy belated birthday to your Aunt Elana, too! You are so fortunate to have so many relatives to get together. I could not believe your grandfather is 92 years old. He does not look it!

I went to a small party for New Year's Eve. That is where I saw Rhodie and helped him celebrate with my festive headband!

    Rhodie Celebrates 2012!

I stayed up until midnight too, but then it was time to go home and go to bed!

What other songs did you play on your violin?

    Your proud teacher,

  3. What a magic New Year's celebration! We celebrate New Year's Eve on the 31st of December in New Zealand as well but I think we would have seen the New Year before you! :) Thank you for sharing a special occasion with us. I wonder if we have any celebrations that are different to you?

  4. Dear Sarah

Your New Year's Eve and Aunt's birthday celebrations sound very special. It was lovely to look at all the photos of your family showing how you celebrate and having such a fun time.

You said that you had turkey for both Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. What is the main meat/food you have on Christmas? In New Zealand, Christmas is our main celebration.

Your New Year's Eve celebrations sound similar to mine this year. We were lucky enough to have my immediate family together on New Year's (this is the first time this has happened for about 15 years). We played a board game called Cranium; it was very loud and we had a blast. Fortunately, I realised what the time was at 12 minutes to 12 and alerted everyone. We also hugged each other, wished everyone Happy New Year and had champagne at midnight.

I really enjoyed your post and am so impressed at your writing skills. I will be sharing your blog with my 11 and 12 year old students when our new school year begins after our summer break.

    Kind regards

  5. Hi Sarah. I love your blog post. You added lots of details, which really helped me to get a good picture in my mind. I felt like I was there, at your family gathering!

I am from Ireland, but I work at an international school in Japan. In Japan at midnight on new year's eve, families go to their nearest temple or shrine. People clap their hands and ring a bell to wake up the gods so that the gods can hear their prayers. Then they pray for a prosperous year. This year is the year of the dragon. I hope it will be a good one!

I hope you keep blogging in 2012. You are a great writer.

  6. Hello Sarah,

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful post about your family at New Year. When with family and friends, New Year becomes a very special occasion.

For me, New Year is a time to go to the community party if it is on or to the lakeside to see the fireworks. I like to talk with families watching for the early firework display.

When the family fireworks are over, I head home to watch the big city fireworks television broadcast from Sydney. They are always spectacular as they are spread all around Sydney's huge harbour. It's time to be with any family who might be visiting or to simply enjoy the broadcast as midnight approaches.

The ball drop in New York's Time Square is something I like to watch when I can. It comes about 16 hours after our midnight and therefore is in our afternoon. :)

I love to see the crowds celebrating as midnight hits around the world. That way the New Year celebrations can last all day.

If it's okay for you to see, I posted a video on my You Tube channel I made of this year's family New Year fireworks. We are a small town so don't expect a huge display. :)

I, really loved reading your New Year's post on how you celebrated it with your family.

We celebrated New Year at my little sister's house and we had a wonderful time with family members and friends.

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for letting me have a blog and for leaving a lovely comment to me on my blog! I played many songs on my violin. One of my favorite is a piece from my orchestra called Trepak. Have you ever heard of this piece before? I am going to do a post on going to the orchestra. Did you play any instruments when you were my age? What was you're favorite song that you played? I hope you keep leaving me comments.

    Sincerely your student,
    ♥Sarah♥

  9. Dear Sarah,

Congratulations on earning your own blog! I can see why you did. You're an amazing writer!

I barely made it up until midnight! I stayed up to watch the ball drop and then I went to bed. I didn't go out to do anything special but just had some friends over. It was nice to spend the time with people who I'm close with.

I'm glad you had such a great time!

I look forward to reading more from you!

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Avery

  10. G'day Sarah,
Looks like you have had a blog for a while. Did you start one when your sister got hers from Mrs Yollis last year?

I stayed up all night on New Year's Eve and said "Happy New Year" to all my friends in New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands, U.K., U.S.A. and Canada.

There were many different time zones but I got a bit of sleep between Australia and the Netherlands.

My nephew was in New York City and saw the ball drop in Times Square. What a lucky fellow he is!

Hope you keep playing the violin and piano. Which do you prefer?

  12. @Ms. Bee,

I really enjoyed reading your comment! Did you see on television the ball drop in New York? What kind of traditions do you have in New Zealand for New Years? I don't know of any special traditions in the United States. In our family we just get together at my Grandma's house every year.

    Sarah

  13. @Miss McLeod,

Thank you for leaving a really lovely comment on my blog! For Christmas we went to my best friends house and they had duck and lamb for the adults and chicken for the kids. All the kids got presents and we played many games.

My Grandma always has a lot of family and friends for New Years and it is a huge party. It is a double celebration because it is also my aunts birthday. We have a great time and I can hardly wait until next years party.

I hope you will visit my blog again.

    Your new blogging friend,
    Sarah

  14. Dear Sarah,
I am so glad you have a new blog and it's fun to read and your pictures are great.
New Year holiday is my favorite, not only that my daughter Elana was born on Dec 31, but it brings my childhood memories alive.
When I was a child we always celebrated this holiday and it was a lot of fun.
You made this celebration even more beautiful by playing violin for all of the guests and everyone enjoyed your performance.
    Love you,
    Grandma Tanya and Grandpa Eugene

  15. Dear Sarah,
I really enjoyed reading your blog. I agree with you, it was a wonderful New Year party. Your grandma is an excellent cook and a great host. She has a wonderful tradition of gathering family and friends to celebrate New Year and your Aunt Elana’s birthday. Being with the people you love and care about was the special part of the party, and I am looking forward to many more celebrations to come.
    Best,
    Grand-aunt Olga

  16. Dear Sarah,

Thank you so much for helping me celebrate my birthday! It was so much fun! My favorite photo that you took is the one of your grandfather (my father) and your great uncle (my uncle) sitting side by side with arms crossed. What a great shot! Did you enjoy being the party's photographer? Were you tired staying up until midnight? Have you always been allowed to stay up until midnight on New Years Eve or is this a recent event now that your are such a grown up?

    Love you lots,

    Aunt Elana

  17. @Elana,

I very happy that yoo commented on my blog and I also loved celebrating your birthday! I really enjoy taking the photos especially one with you blowing out the candles. My favorite photo was also the two brother's sitting on the couch. They were really funny sitting together. I can't believe that they didn't even notice.

I was never allowed to stay up until midnight. My mom would always send us to bed but we were always listening to what was going on downstairs, or reading a book and talking.

    I love you a lot!

    Love,
    Sarah

Thank you for leaving a wonderful post on my blog! My mom was actually born during the year of the dragon! How long have you lived in Japan? Do you like it there? Have you ever visited the United States?

I hope you will continue to leave some comments on my blog.

  19. @Rmannell,

Thank you for leaving such lovely comment on my blog! Thank you also so much for sharing the firework video you took. I loved it. In our town, we do not get fireworks on New Year, but we have it for 4th of July, which is our Independence Day.

  20. @AA,

I really enjoyed reading your comment! Was this BB's first time staying past midnight? Was she tired? I wasn't that tired because I was mostly playing a game on my aunt's phone with my cousin helping. Did you see fireworks?

    Sincerely,
    Sarah
